FAQs

Not sure if martial arts is for you? Worried you might get injured? Or wondering how you sign up? All your questions are answered here. But if you’ve got another one that’s not, get in touch with us. We’d love to hear from you.

In a word, no. You don’t need to be super fit to get started, you just need to start. But you will get fitter along the way, which is one of the many benefits of martial arts. You’ll find with every class, you’ll get stronger, more flexible, build your stamina and improve your endurance. So while you might not start fit, you will definitely get in shape as you progress.

Absolutely not. Beginners are always welcome at the Matrix dojo. And there’s no need to feel intimidated, because everyone in your class – no matter what age or stage they’re at – had to start somewhere too.

Hurting people is not what martial arts is about – and definitely not what we’re about at Matrix Martial Arts. You’ll be learning principles based on self-defence, not attack. So if your Sensei is teaching you correctly, you won’t be in a position to hurt anyone – and you won’t get hurt either. Of course, if you don’t roll and slip fast enough from a punch, you may cop a  knock on the chin. Just kidding. (Sort of.)

Sensei Jake will motivate, push and energise you to help you do your best and reach your potential. But he will also respect you and your limits. Which means you won’t be yelled at or ‘punished’ if you’re struggling to smash it. That’s not the Matrix way. Having said that, if you’ve proven yourself capable and feel like slacking off, you may find yourself doing a few extra burpees. Joking. (Again, sort of).

There’s no better way to find out if you’d like martial arts than giving it a go. So check out our timetable and come along to a class for a FREE TRIAL. We accept walk-ins at every class or, if you’d prefer, you can always let us know you’re coming along by dropping us a message using our Contact Form

Yes, but it’s less fighting and more friendly sparring as you’d expect in any good martial arts school.

As well as having an opportunity to work directly with Sensei Jake in class, you’ll be teamed up with partners in your class. You’ll also keep changing partners so you get used to training with different people with different skills and styles. This in itself will broaden your experience and ability to adapt to different scenarios.

Yes. Being physical is all part of martial arts. But it’s also about technique. So pretty soon you’ll forget that you’re in a headlock with a stranger, for example, and more focused on skilfully manoeuvring yourself out of it. The close contact with others might feel a bit awkward at first, but “being comfortable with uncomfortable situations” is all part of the martial arts journey.
